Honestly I’m not sure what kind of snapper this is. It looks like a big mangrove snapper, we catch this fish regularly around the mangroves. It varies in color. In researching mangrove snappers it seems they are an Atlantic fish. Bone fish, Ladyfish & Tarpon are too, yet have transplanted themselves here, so who knows.

Mangrove Snapper are also known as “grey” snapper. However they vary in colors that ranges from bronze to grey. Hence the name: grey snapper. Mangrove snapper are found both inshore and offshore Their size varies depending on if they are inshore or offshore.  While inshore,  Mangrove snapper can reach up to 2 pounds. Offshore snapper can weigh up to 20 pounds!

While offshore, they can be found near wrecks ad reefs.   They are also commonly found inhabiting:

  • Inlets
  • Deep Holes
  • Beach Piers
  • Bridges and Docks

  • Crab
  • Smaller Pinfish
  • Sardines
  • Shrimp
  • Smaller finger mullet
  • Molluscs
  • Polychaeta worms

Mangrove Snapper are at times, unpredictable.  On most days, they are aggressive and will put up a tough fight. They also have no problem at all aggressively hitting a trolled lure. They are excellent eating and make for great table fare.
